Lake Winnie Fishing Report for May 18, 2017

Hello, from Big Winni and Denny's Resort. The Minnesota walleye opener was a GREAT one, weather and water temps comfortably warm. Fishing was very good for plentiful numbers of fish caught. Plenty of fish to go around. "Keeper" fish were a bit of a challenge. Best areas for the eaters was deeper water down to thirty feet. The first main drop around the lake was good for catching the mixed bag of size with most throw-backs with fish up to 28 inches caught. Minnows as bait was the way to go. Shiners on jigs and also long-lined on a plain hook worked well.

Perch are active as they are coming off spawn, were biting well west and north. Sugar up to Big Stoney.

Pike bite was good also. Look to the main lake humps north of Bena bar and west toward Mallard for Walleye. Start in the 12 foot range and work out. Water temps are in the mid fifty range . Time to go fishing. Remember before coming to Winnie, and leaving Winnie, check your boats for weeds and remove your drain plugs. It's the law and it's very important.
